What to keep after a plumbing job is finished
Published
A clear handover helps you understand what was repaired, what remains to be done and whom to contact if the same problem returns. Keep the agreed scope alongside the final invoice. That gives you a record of the work actually completed, rather than only the problem that started the enquiry.
Ask for the outcome in plain language
For a drain, ask whether the visit cleared an obstruction, inspected pipework or completed a repair. For a leak, ask which component was repaired and whether any access opening needs separate reinstatement. For hot water, record whether the appliance was repaired or replaced and which equipment was installed. If the cause could not be confirmed, ask for that limitation to be recorded.
Keep equipment and repair details
Store model information, supplied operating instructions and any relevant warranty documents. If components were changed, ask for a description that will be useful at the next service. You do not need an unsupported promise that the system will never fail again; you need an accurate account of the work and any care or follow-up advice.
Check the paperwork
Keep the quote, approved variations and final invoice together. Ask for any applicable compliance documents and keep them with the property records. If part of the work is outstanding, confirm what it is, who will complete it and how the next attendance will be arranged. Do not assume an invoice settles every item mentioned during the first conversation.
Record the follow-up pathway
Ask how to report a recurring symptom and what information will be useful. Photographs, timing and the original job reference can make that discussion clearer. Workmanship and product warranties can have different terms, so check the documents rather than assuming they provide identical cover.
A practical handover list
- Work completed and any limitations.
- Equipment make and model, where relevant.
- Approved changes to the original scope.
- Documents supplied and items still outstanding.
- Any agreed maintenance or follow-up.
If you are enquiring about a problem after earlier work, send the suburb, job history and current symptom. That lets us discuss the appropriate next assessment without guessing what the previous visit established.
