Why “trenchless” is not one price
Trenchless sewer work is a family of methods, not a single product. CIPP relining inserts and cures a liner inside a host pipe. Pipe bursting breaks the old pipe outward while drawing a new pipe through the route. Both can reduce continuous excavation, but they do not solve the same pipe condition.
A short section can still have a substantial setup cost. CCTV, locating, cleaning, root or obstruction removal, access points, junctions, curing or installation, testing and surface closeout may sit beside the per-metre rate. That is why a quote that only says “trenchless sewer replacement” is not yet comparable.
Relining, pipe bursting or open trench?
| Approach | Usually considered when | Cost question to ask |
|---|---|---|
| CIPP relining | The existing pipe is still broadly round and aligned, with cracks, roots or joint problems that a liner can address. | What is the setup fee, per-metre rate, diameter, liner system, junction allowance and post-work CCTV? |
| Pipe bursting | A new pipe is needed and the route, access pits, nearby services and ground conditions allow the old pipe to be displaced. | Is this a new pipe installation or another lining method? How many pits, what product, what size and what connections are included? |
| Open-trench replacement | The pipe has a collapse, poor grade, severe displacement or access condition that trenchless work cannot honestly correct. | Who pays for excavation, spoil, traffic or authority requirements, backfill, compaction and final restoration? |
Source note: The published Australian planning ranges reviewed for this guide came from provider pages including Time to Reline’s 2026 pricing breakdown and a Melbourne relining versus replacement guide. They are useful context, not independent market data. Final pricing depends on the footage, pipe, property and scope actually inspected.
What changes the sewer replacement cost?
- Length: more treated metres usually mean more material and labour, while very short sections can carry a higher effective per-metre price because setup is spread over less work.
- Diameter and host pipe: larger liners, different pipe materials and poor internal condition can change equipment, preparation and installation requirements.
- Depth and access: a narrow side path, retaining wall, deep excavation risk or difficult equipment route can add time and safety controls even when the work is trenchless.
- Roots, scale and obstructions: cleaning and preparation come before a liner or bursting head can be used. A camera that cannot pass the whole run is an important limitation to resolve.
- Junctions and connections: branches may need to be identified, reopened and tested after the main run is repaired. A straight pipe rate may not include them.
- Surface and authority interface: driveways, paving, easements, footpaths and work near public assets can create separate access, reinstatement or approval responsibilities.
How to use the planning tool
- Start with the measured length: use the CCTV footage, locator report or a provider’s marked-up plan rather than guessing from the distance between two rooms.
- Run both methods: compare CIPP relining and pipe bursting only as planning bands. The calculator cannot see whether the host pipe is suitable or whether a new pipe can be pulled through.
- Add the property difficulty: choose the surface, access and junction assumptions that a quote must account for. If you are unsure, model the higher-risk option and ask what evidence supports it.
- Read the range as a conversation starter: use it to ask better questions, not to reject a quote solely because it sits outside an online estimate.

What South East Melbourne homeowners should check
South East Water says it maintains the sewerage network up to the property connection point, while the owner is responsible for sanitary drains upstream of that point. The exact arrangement matters, particularly where a blockage or damaged section is close to the boundary. Check South East Water’s sewerage responsibility guide and use its blockage guidance if it is unclear where the problem sits.
In Victoria, the Building and Plumbing Commission describes drainage work as including the construction, replacement, repair, alteration, maintenance, relining, testing and commissioning of below-ground sanitary drainage. Ask the plumber to explain the licensed scope and any inspection or compliance paperwork that applies to the job. Before any excavation or access-pit work, use Before You Dig Australia guidance for Victoria and confirm underground assets and easements.
Frequently asked questions
How much does trenchless sewer line replacement cost per metre?
Published Australian provider guides commonly show pipe relining around AU$400 to AU$1,000 per metre. That rate may sit beside a minimum setup charge, cleaning, junction work, access and testing. Pipe bursting is not reliably represented by one public per-metre rate, so ask for a method-specific quote.
Is trenchless sewer replacement cheaper than digging?
Not automatically. Trenchless work can cost more for the pipe operation but avoid much of the restoration above a driveway, path or established garden. Open trench can be competitive on an accessible lawn, while a difficult collapse or bad grade may make excavation the more appropriate method.
Can pipe relining fix a collapsed sewer?
Usually not if the host pipe has lost the shape needed for a liner to pass and cure properly. The CCTV result, pipe condition and the provider’s proposed preparation should explain why relining is or is not suitable.
Does trenchless mean no digging?
Usually it means no continuous trench along the whole run. A job may still need access pits, cleanouts, junction openings or small excavation, and those items should be visible in the quote.
What should I send when asking for a sewer quote?
Share the suburb, symptoms, recent blockage history, CCTV footage or report, measured length, known access limits, surface above the pipe and whether the issue appears near the property connection point. Ask for the method, inclusions, exclusions and post-work verification in writing.
Need the scope checked?
The South East Plumber provides local plumbing information and connects enquiries with independent providers across Melbourne’s south east and the Mornington Peninsula. Share the suburb, the problem, any CCTV evidence and the question you want answered. This guide does not promise that a particular provider offers relining or pipe bursting.
