Describe the leak you can see
A water leak may show up under a sink, beside a toilet, around a hot-water unit, through a ceiling or as dampness that has no obvious source. You do not need to find the pipe or prove the cause. Explain the room, the visible water and whether the problem is getting worse.
If it is safe, turn off the nearest isolation valve or the main water supply. Do not remove wall linings, enter unsafe roof spaces or touch wet electrical equipment. If the leak is causing immediate danger or major property damage, contact the relevant emergency service first.
Useful leak details
- Where it appears: kitchen, bathroom, laundry, ceiling, wall, roof space, garden or external pipe.
- How much water: a drip, damp patch, steady flow or water spreading across the floor.
- What changed: a new appliance, recent repair, heavy rain, pressure change or sudden failure.
- What is isolated: note any valve or appliance that has already been turned off.
Visible and hidden leaks
A visible leak may be easier to describe, but a hidden leak can still cause staining, swelling, mould or a rising water bill. Share the signs and the location rather than assuming the cause.
